In October 2018, the American Express® Gold Card was revamped and Amex introduced a much more rewarding points structure. One of those changes was earning 4x Membership Rewards® points on dining purchases. However, one downside of this new 4x points category was that it was limited to purchases at U.S. restaurants. That was not good for international travelers, especially since the Amex Gold Card is marketed to people who travel quite a bit.
Amex Improves Dining Category
Now we’ve learned that the American Express Gold Card will earn 4x at restaurants worldwide starting June 6, 2019. This will make the card significantly more lucrative for those who travel internationally.
Quick Glance at the Amex Gold Card
The card has a $250 annual fee and offers the following earning rates:
- 4x points per $1 spent on dining
- 4x points per $1 spent at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 annually
- 3x points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or through amextravel.com
- 1x points per $1 on all other spending
To help offset the annual fee, the card offers up to $220 in credits on an annual basis, including:
- $100 airline fee credit
- $120 dining credit, which gives enrolled members up to $10 in statement credits per month at participating dining partners like Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and participating Shake Shack locations
Bottom Line
The American Express® Gold Card was already one of the best credit cards for dining, and this makes the card much more lucrative. Amex has recently been working to improve the global acceptance of its cards, so this change fits in with that strategy.
This could also be Amex’s response to competition from Chase and Citi. The Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3x points while the Citi Prestige earns 5x points on international dining. Regardless of the reason, as a Amex Gold Card owner, I’m excited about this development.
