To celebrate Annie’s milestone birthday, we headed to Austin, Texas for a long weekend. It was a football weekend for the University of Texas, so room rates at most hotels were a bit inflated. However, this was a celebration and we wanted to be in the heart of everything. So we booked a room at the four star InterContinental Stephen F. Austin in the downtown business district.
History
The building itself was originally built in 1924 as the city’s first high-rise hotel on Congress Avenue. It closed in 1987 and remained that way until Intercontinental Hotels purchased the hotel in 1998. They spent two years and millions of dollars researching, collecting photographs and text descriptions so that the building could be restored to its original beauty.
It has also been deemed a historical site by the Texas Historical Commission.
Location
Located on the corner of historic Congress Avenue and 7th Street, it’s just steps away from many of Austin’s most popular attractions.
Just next door is the 100+ year old Paramount Theatre and across the street is the Driskill Hotel, an Austin icon established in 1886. Within walking distance is the 6th Street bar scene, the Texas State Capitol, tons of great restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities on Ladybird Lake.
Lobby
The lobby is really pretty and has a grand marble double staircase as its signature feature. Out of view to the left is a comfortable lounge area and restaurant. To the right, out of view, is the check-in desk and behind the post is where you’ll find the concierge.
Every employee we encountered made you feel welcome and important. And the concierge, Eleni Varnavas, went out of her way to make our trip special. I emailed her a few days before our arrival to let her know that we’d be celebrating my wife’s birthday. I was hoping to surprise her with a nicer room so I asked if it was possible to get an upgrade. Eleni replied that if there was anything available upon check-in, we could have it.
I wasn’t expecting anything, but during check-in I was very happy to hear that we were upgraded to a Deluxe King Room! After getting our keys, the front desk directed us to the concierge where Eleni was waiting with a champagne toast. We chatted for a few minutes, and it turns out she’s from Chicago, so we had plenty to talk about.
The whole experience really made the trip feel special and again made us feel important. We really appreciated the upgrade and the champagne was a nice touch!
The Room
Our room was located on the 14th floor and we were very happy with it. You could tell that it had been renovated within the last 5 years but still kept that historic charm.
A small but important detail I noticed is that they had plenty of outlets/USB ports for all our electronics. And on one side of the bed was a device that allowed you to change the thermostat, room light and bathroom light without getting out of bed.
The Deluxe King Room features 400 square feet of space, a seating area with sofa sleeper, lounge chair and center table, desk and chair, armoire with television, minibar, and coffee maker.
The bathroom was updated and very functional. It was a nice perk to have the separate makeup station so two people could be in there at the same time.
Miscellaneous
The hotel has a pool and gym but we didn’t use either.
If you walk up the grand staircase in the lobby, you’ll find yourself on a 2nd floor in a landing area. On that level is a bar, conference and event rooms and the aforementioned outdoor terrace. The terrace is a really cool place to enjoy a drink or just relax.
Bottom Line
The only real con to be aware of is the parking rate. The only available parking at the hotel is valet at $41 a night. You really don’t need a car here, especially if your activities are mostly in the downtown area. We used ride-sharing services whenever we couldn’t or didn’t want to walk and had no issues at all.
The bottom line is we loved our stay at the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin! It’s a beautiful, historic, and updated hotel with impeccable service.
