I had an absolutely amazing time in China, but after a week, it was time to come home. Annie and I had gotten really lucky on the flight from Chicago to Beijing, getting bumped up into United’s new Premium Plus seats. However, on the 13 hour flight back to Chicago, we were back in coach.
I was prepared for some discomfort that comes with sitting on a flight that long in the coach cabin. However, this particular flight was made even worse because my seat wouldn’t recline. Trying to get comfortable and being able to sleep were important for me and I was counting on being able to recline.
I’m not usually a big complainer, but a 13 hour flight in a seat that wouldn’t recline made for a very long and uncomfortable trip. When I got home, I submitted a complaint on United.com and got 5,000 MileagePlus miles from them as a gesture of goodwill.
To Recline or Not to Recline
I rarely, if ever, recline my seat on flights. I’m firmly in the camp that reclining one’s seat is really unnecessary, at least on short flights. I think reclining one’s seat is usually more bothersome to your neighbor behind you, than it is adding to your own comfort. Maybe I think too much about how my actions affect other people, but I would prefer the person in front of me not recline either. For longer flights, however, I do think the option to recline is necessary. Sitting in just one position on long flights can be very uncomfortable and the ability to change positions really helps with circulation.
So the first time I tried to recline, I was upset to find that my seat simply wouldn’t let me do it. Trying to sleep sitting straight up and with no chance of changing positions, really made the flight hard to deal with. At times, it was just so uncomfortable, I wanted to freak out.
So when I arrived home, I logged onto United.com to lodge a complaint. It took them six days to close out my complaint but I was satisfied with the end result. On the 6th day, I received an email apologizing for the “negative experience” and that they were going to add bonus miles to my MileagePlus account to make this up to me.
The next day, I checked and my United miles balance was higher by 5,000 miles!
