On July 25, 2024, American Express officially announced what had been rumored for several weeks. Amex is increasing the annual fee on the American Express® Gold Card from $250 to $325. They’re also adding a few new benefits and adjusting a few others. Whether this is a net positive or negative will vary depending on if you can use the new benefits or not. Let’s review what’s new, what’s changing and what’s staying the same.
What’s New and/or Changing
- $325 annual fee (up from $250)
- $7 monthly Dunkin Donuts credit
- $50 semi-annual Resy credit
- 4x points at restaurants will be limited to $50,000 in purchases per year
- Milk Bar and Shake Shack will be removed from the $10 monthly dining credit, but Five Guys will be added
The $10 monthly Uber cash credit remains unchanged.
Bottom Line
From a strictly financial standpoint, the card is going to cost $75 more per year. However, if you’re able to utilize the Dunkin Donuts credit every month, you’ll get $84 back. In addition, if you’re able to use the semi-annual Resy credit, that’s another $100 per year.
So is this card still a keeper or should you get rid of it? Well it depends. If you think you can use those new credits or you frequent Five Guys, it’s probably worth keeping. But if you don’t like Dunkin Donuts, won’t use the Resy credits or are unhappy that Shake Shack or Milk Bar has been removed from the dining credit, it could be time to move on.
It’s annoying that credit card companies are continuing to increase fees and turn their benefits into coupon books. However, this can still be a valuable card for many, but it’ll vary based on your spending habits
